I have the latest windows media player but just recently it is no working properly. It is not playing any type of media files. From mp3 to avi to wmv. Nothing plays. No error message just the "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." window pops up. I think I may be missing some type of codec or something because realplayer one is not playing any video files but it is playing mp3s.

Please help.

I have reinstalled it. But that didn't work.

How do you uninstall it I couldn't find an unistall or anything other than uninstalling the folder itself.

dear Claymca,
You can uninstall using ADD REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS,(you can open that by going to Start, settings, Add/Remove Programs) wherein you will encounter the Media Player when you press details in Accessories (I think that should get you there)
Just Uncheck the box for WMP and then restart, once you have done that you can reinstall.
I hope this works,

WMP is giving me a headache too, I can't go into the full mode.
The site that LINNEY has suggested is allright and I hope you can get your answers from there.

I hope this helps,
cheers

I think to uninstall WMP 9 you may have to remove it completely by repairing Windows and thereby re-installing WMP 8. If you want to get back to WMP 9 then you can install it again. I think the Add/Remove, Window's Components relates to just Start Menu and Desktop links only.

Mention of Full Mode problems, I have seen this occur after you install WMP 9 and receive a message that there was some error with the install and that some parts of WMP 9 might not work. The same install will work on 9x but not XP. Leaving the faulty install on XP can lead to loss of Full Mode.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before you installed WMP 9.

Try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I found the problem. I had that nimo codec and some others i jus uninstalled them and it works fine. Thanks for the help. It all was very useful.

Well at least I have solved the full mode problem , Check if u have FRESH UI installed in ur system as that has a property which will lock your MEDIA PLAYER in the skin which was running when u installed this software.

The way to solve it is Open FRESH UI go to the MEDIA PLAYER >skin chooser >double click and a window will come up showing you the present skin just delete it and leave it blank,

Now when you reopen your WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER it will open into the DEFAULT FULL MODE SCREEN of WMP 9.0 and thus you get full functionality back in your hands.

Do let me know if this helps.
cheers
