Hello,

On starting my computer media player would start automatically. I checked programs->startup, and media player is not mentioned there. In fact startup column is empty.

I believe, after installing some game, this has started happening; which launches media player. Although I am not sure that this is the case.

Question: How can I stop windows media player from starting automatically when the system starts up.

Thanks.

You need a program to examine all the possible registry and profile locations for auto-starting programs. One linney recently recommended (Startup Inspector), is quite clever using a web database to check for possible malware:

Hi There!

Here's what you do:

Open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and delete any key that says media player or it's related whith it

You could temporarily rename wmplayer.exe to wmplayer.bak and see what happens when you reboot the computer, and see if you can ascertain anything from any error message (if there is one).

Windows XP Professional starts logon scripts, startup programs, and services referenced in these registry subkeys and folder locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
