Windows Media Player cannot play ASF file - missing codec

I have bought an MP3 player that has voice recording. Unfortunately I selected the option to record in ASF instead of WAV format by mistake, so although I can hear the recording from the MP3 Player, when I copy the file through the USB connector to my Win XP PC, I get the following error message with click options:

"An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help."

When I click on Web Help, I get the following:

You've encountered error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.
Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion of the file) because a required codec is not installed on your computer.

When I click on the link for WMPlugins.com I get the following:
The codec you are missing is not available for download from this site. You might be able to find it on another site by searching the Web for "42" (this is the WaveFormat or FourCC identifier of the codec).

Since then I have tried downloading several ASF converters and suchlike, but none of them seem to work.

Please help!

You might try updating to Media Player 10 it should hopefully install your missing codec. Or if you don't want to install 10 try and reinstall the redistributable version 9.

asf files do not have specific codecs associated with them. Generally asf files will be encoded using the WMA and WMV codecs, these are native to Windows Media Player.

However asf files can be encoded using any codec, you should download some software that will detect the codec that is used for your asf files. The microsoft thought on this is available here

I have already migrated to Player 10 as suggested by Jump1ng but this does not help. I tried to follow the softpedia link suggested by gpalmer711 but that just sends me around in circles back to where I started. I have also followed bcastner's suggestion and downloaded from the Microsoft website but that does not fix it either.
