Can anyone help? My computer with WinME has started locking up on startup and will only run on safe mode. The file that it locks up on is bt848vbi.386 (???) Is this a display folder or something. Have taken it to local shop and all he did was install ME which doesn't seem to have solved the problem. Have also ran Scandisk and cannot ascertain any issues for that filename.

Does anyone have any ideas as how I can rectify this problem please???

Howdy:

The file in question is for a Brooktree video driver.. Use Device Manager (in Safe Mode) to remove your video card.. Reboot the system.. Windows will find the video and install generic drivers.. Now, simply install the latest drivers for the card and your OS..

Thanks for the advice but it doesn't seem to have worked. I did as you said by removing the display adapter through device manager and it has picked it up automatically to run in safe mode again but the problem still remains. (Plus the display column now doesn't appear in device manager!)

The computer automatically shuts itself down in standard startup mode without even getting to the Windows login screen. Any ideas??

Download the drivers for your vid card.. put them on a floppy.. Boot your computer to Safe Mode.. install the proper drivers.. reboot..

I have tried that but it still doesn't do anything different. Perhaps this may help...
Startup sequence is as follows

Runs standard cpu startup - Windows ME load page
System configuration table appears
"Verifying DMI Pool Data...."

LOCKS UP AND SHUTS DOWN

Boot into BIOS and set the Default setup.. Save the change..

Murray

Can you give me a step by step guide please Murray?

From startup if you could

Start your computer.. Watch the screen.. during the memory check, it will tell you how to get into BIOS (normally, press the <delete> key).. Once in BIOS, click on the "Default" setting.. Move over to Exit and Save Changes.. Click "yes" when prompted.. Continue booting..

Murray

Murray, many thanks for the advice, it still will not start up though even after the default bios setting, when I changed it, it only changed the boot sequence to A,C, SCSI from C,CDROM,A. Nothing else changed. I have tried to upgrade the OS to XP Pro to see if the ME install had anything to do with it but I cannot do that in safe mode as the computer won't pick up the CDROM drive in Device Manager or Windows Explorer. It does load it in DOS (boot sequence) but can I upgrade it through there or will I have to delete the partition as I DO NOT want to lose any work or programs on it. Any help appreciated

Have you got another graphics card you could try in the machine?

'Have taken it to local shop and all he did was install ME' - do you mean he reinstalled ME on top of itself?

Is there any history on what happened before this problem appeared (eg, had you changed any hardware/software, had a major crash, virus etc)?
