When i start my pc - hp8775 - it automatically comes up with the scandisk as if there was an improper shutdown.
I close all my applications prior to shutdown. I don't know how to stop this from recurring. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

thanks for the suggestion -- i tried it, however, still unsuccessful

I'm having the same problem. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 8000, and defragged the hd the other night. The next time I booted it up after it was done, scandisk popped up with 'improper shutdown detected'...the thing is, it doesn't ever /finish/. A couple of times I've stopped it, made sure everything but Explorer was closed down, but it still claims something else is writing to the drive and interfering with it.

Also ran scandisk in DOS mode, where it claimed to have fixed something, and reinstalled WinME (without reformatting the hd); I've been through the forums here already, and some other pages, found patches and fixes, but nothing has worked yet. The nice but not completely effectual fellow at Dell tech support could only recommend wiping the hd and starting all over, which--well, it seems like overkill to me, to say the least. ;)

Howdy:

Try this..

ScanDisk may run on restart, although Windows may seem to shut down correctly
This can be caused by the fact that during the shutdown process, the contents of the virtual cache are written to the destination device. If the destination device is an IDE hard disk, data may be written to the hard disk's onboard cache but not to the disk itself. When this occurs, the data is lost from the cache when the computer turns off.

To resolve this issue, you need to obtain the necessary update:

Select Start, and then click Windows Update
When the page displays, click Product Updates to create the catalogue of available updates for your computer
Select the box next to Window IDE Hard Drive Cache Package, after the catalogue is created, to select this package to download
Select all of the items you want to obtain for your computer, click Download, and then follow the rest of the directions to complete the download process
Note: For the updated Ifsmgr.vxd driver to add the necessary delay during shutdown, it may be necessary to update the registry key. The CacheWriteDelay value specifies the number of milliseconds of required delay.

Start the Registry Editor
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion
On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value Name: CacheWriteDelay
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Radix: Decimal
Value: 2000

Exit RegEdit and restart Windows

The scandisk and defrag has been a problem for a long time, here is how I fixed it.
You may want to look at *enditall* or *enditall 2*. You can download from google or pc mag. and they are free. Enditall 2 will show what is running in the backgrown, but is not as easy to setup.
You need to close most of the programs running in the backgrown and the best way to do this is to get *enditall 2* at google. Enditall 2 will close only the programs that are not needed and protect the ones that are needed. It will even let you close your screen saver and power management. First I close the programs in the system tray, the icons by the clock, then I use enditall 2,then do a disk clean, then scan disk and then defrag.
This is what works for me, I did the safemode once and it worked fine but I think the enditall way is fast and easy.

When I do Scandisk on my ME I turn off all programs and processes that are running in the back ground. It still stops in the middle of the scan and starts over again. I could never get a full scan done. Then one day trying to do a scan again I saw the hour glass appear for a split second. Knowing that I turned off everything I waited for a few minutes and the hour glass flashed again. At the very same time the hour glass flashed I saw a light flicker at the rear of my computer it was the NIC card. I unpluged the network cable and the Scandisk is working perfect now. So now when I want to do a Scandisk I also unplug the network cable. This problem does not happen with any other OS I have connected to the network, just ME.

You can also Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown for a short term fix.

Click Start>Programs>Acessories>System Tools>System Information. This opens the Microsoft Help and Support page on my system it might be different on yours.

Click Tools>System Configuration Utility.

Click the Advanced button and mark the "Disable Scandisk after bad startup" check box.

Click OK. Restart your computer when prompted.

you can also go into msconfig and shut off the automatic scandisk.
