Recently, I've installed Windows ME onto my PC. About 2 weeks of it running smoothly, the system started freezing up. Now, when i turn on my pc, it is permantly froze. The PC turns on, however, it is constantly searching and nothing boots up. The monitor then goes into 'sleep' mode and the pc stops searching. I cannot enter the safe mode or change any settings because there is nothing displayed on my screen. Can anyone help or know the problem???? Also know that my floppy disk has been disabled so i cannot use a rescue disk.

I ran into the same problems with windows me, and it could be a number of factors, including your motherboard, sound card, display adaptor card..etc.
I solved the problem by installing win2000. All problems disappeared.
You can look at the history of my issue if you look at the thread titled "Freeze on startup -windows me", by irocz dated 10/31/01, might give you some assistance.

irocz,

Ok, sounds good.. Now how do i install Windows 2000 if i have no start up screen or can't use the floppy drive?

Ok, I do not think you can go very far without a floppy, I suggest you enable your floppy drive, and if it does not work you can buy one for about $10.
To install win2k, you need the cd to create 4 diskettes for the setup, you can do that on another pc. When you start the system, put your first setup floppy in and boot the machine.

The way you make it sound, your computer doens't even post (checks the memory and detects hard drives and CD-ROMs)?

What is the brand and speed of your CPU? That possibly has gone bad.

What I would do first (just to make sure) is remove all components except the nessary stuff for the computer to run (just the mobo, CPU, RAM and video card, no floppy or hard drive). If it doesn't boot up, replace the video card with a different one, if you have access to one that you know works. If it doesn't boot up then, then the CPU is dead. From what you where describing, that is what I automatically assume, but take these steps to double check. Mike Wills
