HELP! Once the Ctrl-Alt-Del screen comes up, I type my password in then hit OK. From there it takes 15 mins or more I bet before I get a desktop. It just sits at the logon screen being unresponsive. Does anyone have any idea what can cause this or how to troubleshoot this?
I appreciate any help. Thank you,

if the computer logs on to a domain, check TCP/IP settings, set DNS to your local dns server which holds SRV records for your domain.

if not try the following...

1.) set you TCP/IP adress to a static (fixed) one in the range of 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.254...

2.) Under services, turn the WIA service (Windows Imaging) to manual...

3.) open a folder, under Extras/FolderOptions, on one of the TABS you will find a list of Options with check boxes, look for the one about searching for Network Drives/Printers at Boot, uncheck that one...

4.) Reboot...

See if you have any services that are flagging as "Starting" but not actually running.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
