I have a dell laptop that was getting a 720 error when trying to use dial up connections. I connected this machine to the local network (DHCP), and it won't connect or get an IP address. When I try an IPCONFIG /ALL I get the following error:
Windows IP Configuration An internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Additional Information: Unable to query routing information.

I am getting no IP Address.. Any ideas other than restalling the OS?

Is your DHCP Client service running? Check its dependencies and see if they're running.

I never thought of that. No it is not and won't start.

Could not Start the DHCP on local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

Open Regedit and go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp
Open DependOnService

What do you have in here?

I'm having the same problem, and under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp , I have

Tcpip
afd
NetBT

In that order. I'm totally lost as to what else I should do. As for the image from stduc, I have all the same dependencies.

You need to check the state of each of the dependency service and start or trouble shoot those. DHCP Client won't start if the dependency services aren't started and working.

Report back on how you get on with them. It's the same method - find them in the services list and check on their state and start them if necessary. Then go back to DCHP and start that.

DHCP client, TCP/IP Netbois should both be on automatic, started.

Take a look at the event viewer - that may give a clue.

Hmmm, I know this may sound stupid, but when I look under services (local) for those 3 services, I don't see any of them. The closest I have for any is ICP/IP helper, and that's already started. I don't see afd (whatever that means) or NetBT. I'm starting to think the fact that I can't find these means I have a major issue.

Thank you for your help so far.

Holy moly, I got it to finally work. And I got help from y'all and, believe it or not, from the microsoft website. I'm postin the steps I took below, mind you, this was for a machine that did not have SP2 (Yet), but I'm loadin that now as I type.

Manual steps to recover from Winsock2 corruption
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 instructions
To repair Winsock if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note Restart the computer after you run this command. Additionally, for computers that are running Windows XP SP2, there is a new netsh command that can rebuild the Winsock key. For more information, visit the following Web site:
(Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet such as antivirus, firewall, or proxy clients may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality.

Note If these steps do not resolve the problem, follow the steps in the next section.

Windows XP without Service Pack 2 instructions
To repair Winsock if you do not have Windows XP SP2 installed, delete the corrupted registry keys, and then reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.

Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

For more information about how to back up the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756 ( How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
1. Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2. Click Install.
3. Click Protocol, and then click Add.
4. Click Have Disk.
5. Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
6. On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.

If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) does not appear, follow these steps:a. Click Start, and then click Search.
b. In the Search Companion pane, click More advanced options.
c. Click to select the following three check boxes:• Search system folders
• Search hidden files and folders
• Search subfolders

d. In the All or part of the file name box, type nettcpip.inf, and then click Search.
e. In the results pane, right-click Nettcpip.inf, and then click Install.

7. Restart the computer.

Thanks again to everyone who helped.

Congratulations. It might be an idea of you submitted your solution as a FAQ.

Hmmmm, I had tried using winsockxpfix and it didn't fix my problem. Of course, that was before I got the computer updated to SP2, maybe that was my problem.

It was an older laptop that had been lying around and I discovered the problem when I booted it up and tried to connect to the internet to update windows. So I'm not doubting the program. I read quite a few good reviews on using winsockxpfix but unfortunately, my luck wasn't that good. Just glad I didn't end up having to reload Windows, althought I think that may have been faster.
