When opening word I get the messate that Microsoft word cannot install the necessary files due to Windows installer error 1605
I have done the usual search into the startup folder and although I have clicked the icon to show hidden files I can not see any templates in it

I have reinstalled and updated Office 2003 but to no avail

I have explored this answer and to no avail. I have uninstalled office 2003 and reinstalled it but to no avail. I have downloaded the registery uninstall package and then reinstalled office but to no avail
When I go into the startup folder in word there is no file listed despite the fact that I have chosen the option to display all files in the view menu of the tools section

Any help would be appreciated

Have you tried asking your question in the Office Forum on this site?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
