Windows Installer Crashing 1

Hi

We are experiencing an issue as we are switching XP Pro users from a work group, onto a Windows 2003 domain. Their home profiles are being redirected onto the serve and a healthy percentage have had issues with the windows installer crashing after the change. We can't install, repair or remove any software with them in this state. We've tried all the repairs recommended by Microsoft, and the only thing that corrects the issue is running a windows repair.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be causing this issue we would appreciate the help. If I can provide more specific information please let me know what you need.

Do you have an exact error message? Is it the same message in all instances? Are there any clues in the Event Viewers?

Are they updated with the latest Windows Installer version?

Rather than a repair being a solution have you tried running the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

I am having the same (or very similar) problem.

The problem I am having is with a co-workers computer, so I may not be able to answer all question to your satisfaction, but I will certainly try.

It all started when we switched to logging in to a domain (windows 2003). This XP machine had a few bumps along the way, until we tried to install XML6 on to it. When trying this, we get the error:

[red]The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.[/red]

We are obviously not running in safe mode, so I start digging around for windows installer issues.

I ran sfc /scannow It ran for about an hour, and then it just closed and disappeared. I thought it would generate a report, but I didn't see any. Shrugging my shoulders, I reboot the computer and try to install XML again, same problem.

I tried unregistering msiexec (msiexec /unreg)
The Windows Installer service is running.
I tried everything from here:

Then, I thought... maybe windows update will fix the computer.

I get:

When I Register or Reinstall, I get... Downloadind 100%, Registering 100%, and then a blank page. I've done this about a dozen times, all to no avail.

I've seen it mentioned to delete windows\system32\LegitCheckControl.dll, the didn't help. I tried deleting the SoftwareDistribution Folder from windows & windows\system32, that didn't help.

I cannot validate my version of Windows XP (SP2) either.
If I go to

Thanks for your time and attention. Eventually, I did a Windows XP repair. This fixed some of the problems, but not all. There were still problems though, registry related. It turned out to be a security issue. The eventual fix was to follow this knowledge base article.

OK...so as to the original post, and a solution for your problem, much to my surprise I contacted MS regarding the updates failing and they ended up troubleshooting our issues free of charge. It turns out there is an update issue that was changing registry permission on the registry folder that only surfaces when joining the domain. On our network it caused issues with system performance, windows installer, windows updates and more! They ended up providing a batch file that corrected the issue. It basically just restored permissions for the registry folder. Here is the case summary from the tech at microsoft.

909444: Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the %windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC.
