I've got an XP machine and W7 machine, both with OEM versions of the OS. Every so often, especially when there is no internet access, I get a report that the version of Windows is not genuine. This seems to disappear when there is internet access.

Is there some built in process in Windows that craves for the internet? While it is going through cold turkey, it says it is not genuine but as soon as it gets its fix, it says everything is genuine.

Thanks.

Is it the WGA program trying to contact MS and when it can't, it pops up the message?

Yep, it's the "phone home" "signal", Adobe have or had a similar setup with some of their apps, my copy of CS3 used to shut down if I was "off air" for more than two days, which is one of the reasons I am no longer an "Adobe user"

Chris.
