The scenario is: I have a Windows XP Pro client at a remote location that I use to connect to my office for my accounting software, amongst other things. Recently my VPN stopped working. After some troubleshooting, I discovered that the second I disable my Windows Firewall on the client, the VPN begins to work again. No new software or hardware has been installed, and just to be safe, I opened up VPN port 1723 on the client, and GRE port 47. Now I know that Windows Firewall SUPPOSEDLY doesn't block outbound traffic, but in this case it may be. Does anyone know a work around for this? I would really like to keep my Windows Firewall enabled, and still be able to connect my VPN. XP is up to date with all Microsoft updates and Service packs. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried opening the outgoing port?

download processexplorer from MS, start it, highlite the vpn process, do a rightclick on it and choose properties/tcp/ip, there u see what ports the software tries to open.
open firewall, advanced and open the ports in question

I had the same problem, only it was blocking remote desktop once I had created the VPN. Remote Desktop was allowed through the firewall (or at least thats what it said in the Exceptions list), but it still wouldnt work.

I ended up disabling the firewall on that PC, it was the only way to get it to work. This is the 5th PC I've had to do this to.

Yay microsoft firewall...

smah, Thank you very much for the help, however, the patch didn't seem to do the trick. Thought for sure you had it nailed. I'm yet to try Lemon13's idea, because I haven't found the time, nor am I too familiar with it. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Did you ever try System Restore on the problem machine?

forum463 is a specific VPN forum, might be something there for you?

I have tried restore with no results. I will check out the links however, and see if any can help. I will also try to post this same question in the vpn forum.
