Trying to connect work group with Win 7. No go. So I check to see if sharing is being blocked by the Windows Firewall - I have no Firewall! (I'm using a router, so I'm not worried!) I try to turn it back on in the Control Panel > Security, "Service is turned off". So I go to "Services", and it shows "Stopped". I click on "Start", and am told "Access Denied"! I am the Administrator - why am I denied???

Security Templates

Here are some rough notes of mine, to be truthful I have forgotten what they mean, but I'll post them anyway in case you can decipher them.

Open Security Templates in Console Root (MMC).

Select security template (ie. workstation, setup security, or Windows XP Legacy Security - v1.0.1).

Expand security template and select System Service.

Right-click Service name to access Properties.

Check "Define this policy setting in template"

You can then access the Security permissions (you may or may not have to click on Edit Security, this just depends on the actual Service settings (ie. Disabled etc.) whether the Security permissions page displays automatically or not).

OK people - figure this out! I had recently tried a new defrag program. I thought this may have messed something up, so I did a System Restore to before I defragged. Didn't help. So I "Undid last restore" so I would have a current basis to try all of Linny's help notes. When I got back to "current" - everything works fine!!! I had rebooted many times (both warm and cold), in the last few days fighting this. So it wasn't a simple reboot problem! I guess it's just another "Welcome to the world of Windows" situation!

P.S. My XP links to Win 7 just fine!!!

I'm sorry - I was so happy to get it working again, I forgot to thank everyone who responded! Thanks again!!!

Glad it is all fixed (mysteriously). Enjoy your Windows 7 too, I think Microsoft have a winner with that operating system.
