TIA,

i suspect this a self-inflicted wound. when i open windows explorer, all is good. when i open a sub-folder from the same window, it opens in a second window. changing the settings folder options has no effect. i've tried a couple of registry hacks concerning bagmru but no effect there either. i'm open to suggestions.

You mean the setting "Open each folder in the same window"? As usually that is the one you need to select (its set to "Open each folder in its own window" by default).

did not help,

clicked tools --> folder options --> checked "open each folder in the same window"
clicked apply
clicked view
clicked apply to all folders

opening a sub-folder still opens a new window.

thanks, don't know how i got it to this state of affairs.

Also under Folder Options, View tab - make sure 'Launch folder windows in a seperate process' is not selected.

tried the same process option, same results.
