I just started getting this Windows "Dw" error with the message "this program has performed an illigal operation and will be shut down." Dang it .... I lost the error's detail message, that I copied to the clip board :-(

I will shut down and restart my system to get it again ... It only pops up when the system is first coming up. I haven't opened anything "myself" yet .... BRB .... in the mean time anyone know what might cause this ? ?

I am using ....

Windows 98
Netscape 4.75 email and browser
IE 5.0 browser "only"
ZoneAlarm Pro firewall ver. 3 with latest update!
PC-cillin 2002 with most current auto-update!

It should be one of your startup programs causing it. Would DW be a download manager type of program? Look for one or a reference to DW in msconfig under the startup tab and uncheck it. Let us know what it is.

Here is the details for that Dw pop-up error

This dw.exe file is located in my C:\Program Files\DownloadWare .... when I right click > properties .... pick General tab it was created May 6, 2002 accessed May14,2002 ... Digital Signatures listed is Great Net, Inc. with time stamp of April 19, 2002. When I click on Details, the Counter signatures listed is VeriSign Time
Stamping Services with time stamp of April 19,2002 ...

This DownloadWare folder has only this dw.exe and two folder's .... Cfg with four files 1013.pid, 51.dl, status.cfg and user.cfg ... all are size 1kb created on 5/06/02 and the other folder is Downloads with only one file 51.dat size 0kb created 5/06/02 ... which when I open that file, Coral Photo House opened up with a blank picture ....

This is very odd ... as I have not down loaded any thing recently beside ZoneAlarm Pro and PC-cillin on 4/27/02 ...ZA was a direct download from their website, and PCC I used Digital Rivers ebot service to download .... And I can't remember the last time I used Coral Photo House [maybe in December 2001] . . .

I guess the fix-it to this problem is to delete the DownloadWare folder and it's content ? ? ? I wonder if the kid's where in here screwing around again :-(

I got another question, though not related to this issue here .... so I'll start another thread :-)

thanks for your reply, if I have answered my own question, no need to respond . . .

I would start with one thing. 1) Get the kids off the computer! 2) Run a virus scan. I think for the most part you have answered your own question.

When you get an illegal operation it is caused by an external application other then Windows. What the application is doing is trying to access memory that doesn't exsist or trying to store in memory that doesn't exsist or is already being used. This is due to poorly written 3rd party software. What is causing it is a start up program that runs upon boot up. If you are unsure what the dw.exe is and you haven't downloaded it recently my suggestion is to remove it.
