I am running a Win 98se machine and I would like to make the system as stable as possible. I had run RegEdit on my system (yeah, bad choice i know) and deleted some of the registry settings (yeah, even worse choice, i know) and now I am unable to properly update Windows with the updates on the Microsoft website, I get copy error:

"an error has occurred copying WINNET.dll" and then SHDOCW.dll and SHLWAPI.dll, and BROWSEUI.dll, and URLMON.dll, and MSHTML.dll

and the install goes on to "seemingly" finish, but upon another scan it tells me I need exactly what I just tried to install.

Nor can I unistall and reinstall any microsoft programs. I attempted to remove the old updates and IE6 which is giving me problems but they wouldn't uninstall, got error "another installation needs to finish before this installationcan proceed, please restart". and of course restarting doesn't change a thing. Are my registry settings messed? Is there any chance to fix with out a total rebuild?

Any idea's?

Also I found two corrupted mp3 files. Both are files I made after ripping a cd, and both after being deleted, remained on the system. Now I moved the directory that they were in onto the desktop and attempted to delete that but I get an error message saying "cannot delete file... the specified file cannot be found". After moving the persistent bugger to the trash, the trash can looks full and everytime i empty it I get that error message again. And no, I cannot see the file in the trash can. What the!

pleeeeaasseee help it's very tiresome

cheers,
Galdaran

You'll save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by backing up what you can and reloading windows.

Actually if you just made the change, boot to dos, run scanreg /restore and restore from a date prior to when you did this. You might get lucky and be up and running.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

if mattjurado's suggestion doesn't work...then delete the wininit.ini and wininit.bak files from DOS found in Windows....plus
Deltree C:\windows\temp\*.*
to get rid of a munged install - otherwise Reinstall on top of,,,,,better to Clean Install if you're backed up (see my sig)
