Windows 98 User Log On By-Pass Problem

5 user profiles with passwords have been set up on a Windows 98(not SE)Dektop unit to force password logon to the active desktop. Once booted to the log on banner where all of the UID's are present, clicking on the "cancel" button loads up a default profile with no name/identity (not even "default"), making the UID's and passwords an ineffective security measure. No other ID's show in the Users list besides those recently created. All profiles load properly when passwords are given. Can't seem to locate any default profiles anywhere. Does anyone have a resolution?

The default logon is an inherent part of Win98. Even pressing the ESC key will accomplish the same thing. The thng to remember is that the Win9X operating system IS NOT a multi-uer system but rather a multi-tasking platform designed for a single user. The ability to interact within a network is rudimentary, at best.

You'll need Win2000 (or Unix/Linux, preferrably) to accomplish what you want.

There's always a better way...

You can also force the users to be validated by the network before logon with this registry entry:

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon]
Value Name: MustBeValidated
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

This will not let anyone escape or cancel out of the logon screen.

mot98's suggestion will work, but just remember that if the PC has a network connectivity problem you won't be able to get into it at all.

NO Logon= NO Desktop

You would ahve to boot into safe mode, change that registry seting to 0 then reboot into Windows again. Because you can't troubleshoot network problems in safe mode.

i tried what mot98 suggested on a windows me machine and it didnt work...finally found a site somewhere talking about it that said the method above would only work on a domain, not a stand alone

Yes, of course this only works on a domain.

Try this... Its only $10. If you throw it in the startup folder, or make an entry in the Run registry key, it will force any user(s) to enter a password (of your choosing) to use the desktop.

Workstation Lock Ver 3.3

Had them buy the Workstation Lock Ver 3.3 from and used it to secure the PC.
Then kept the user log-on's and passwords so they could customize their desktops/shortcuts etc.

Best to be done for a stand alone Win98 unit with 5 users.

Good tips all -

Thanks
