are any of the updates worthwhile downloading? bearing in mind that some of the files are asbig as 20Mb!... and I am on dial up

I have never updated. which if any are worth having?

hi; microsoft will not support win 98 anymore , so I think it will be better if you update your pc before the time is over.
better to prevent than crying.

Your best bet is to do only those updates that are listed as "Critical Updates" as many of them will patch known problems and fix security holes. With the exception of Internet Explorer 6 SP1, which must be downloaded separately, the sum total of all the other critical updates is only about 12 or 13 MB...probably worthwhile, even over a dial-up connection.

Support for WIN98 is going away, but they are wavering on the time frame.

Yes, I would recommend updating. Do the Internet Explorer upgrade first, then go back and do the critical updates. If you play the latest games you might be able to get DirectX 9 off of one of there CD's. That could save you a lot of time.

You might want to let it run over night if it will take hours, unless you get charged by the minute. Thats what I used to do, make sure it starts downloading OK, and go to bed.
