I recently had Windows Xp on my computer, I uninstalled it and now I have Windows 98. I can't install my Scanner softwear because it says 'Twain Driver' needed. My digital camera softwear installed but when I try to bring pictures up off of it, nothing happens... Any Suggestions?
Thank You
Alicia

Sorry I forgot to Mention that I went onto the internet and downloaded a Twain Driver, but still nothing works.

First try by Installing Kodak Imaging from
Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs> Windows Setup >Accessories >Details tick "Imaging" , Apply, OK

If no go:
Use System File Checker to Extract these files one at a time from Win98 CDROM or wherever the .cab files are on your PC...C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS usually

GO Start> Run SFC
click OK.

Click "Extract one file from installation disk."

In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" box, type
Twain.dll
Click Start

In the "Restore From" box, Browse to the Windows 98 CD (D:\Win98) or .cab location

In the "Save File In" box, Browse to C:\WINDOWS
and then click OK.

Click OK and then click Yes to restart the computer.

Repeat above procedure for all 4 files;
Twain.dll
Twain_32.dll
Twunk_16.exe
Twunk_32.exe

Thanks very much for the help, I did all your suggestions, But it still comes up that i'm missing the 'Twain Driver' when I try to install the canon scanner softwear.

Your Welcome
As long as you have win98 CDROM, continue;
Unistall "Imaging", restart
Uninstall your Canon software, restart
Find All instances of those 4 files above on your HDD and remove them if any still exist., restart
Install "Imaging", restart
Install Canon, restart

Test it

Look for Twain_32.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
if not there...move a copy from windows to there

Do you have a Scanners and Camera Applet in ControlPanel?

Try this also
Go Start>Run REGSVR32 Twain.dll
REGSVR32 Twain_32.dll

my bad;
Don't move the twain_32.dll to the \System folder.

Have you installed PAINT from Accessories, just like Imaging.?(install it)

Are you sure your Scanner and camera are supported by 98 too, as well as XP (two diff file systems, usually).

Depending on who put 98 on your System, some components that should be there may not be installed. (Such that if "Minimal" installation was chosen during Setup, and/or even "Typical")

Hello, Thanks again,
I tryed Go Start>Run REGSVR32 Twain.dll
REGSVR32 Twain_32.dll

.. For Twain.dll a box came up and said:

LoadLibrary("Twain.dll") failed. GetLasError returns 0x0000001f.

.. For Twain_32.dll a box came up and said:

Twain_32.dll was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found
DllRegisterServer may not be exported, or a corrupt version of Twain_32.dll may be in memory. Consider using PView to detect it and remove it.

I beileve that there is corrupted versions of both Twain.dll and Twain_32.dll... Twunk_16.exe and Twunk_32.exe are good. How do I use 'PView' to detect Twain.dll and Twain_32.dll and remove them?

As for the programs being compatable for Windows 98, they are. I had Windows 98 before I had Windows XP and the programs all worked fine. They worked for Windows XP as well. But I know that they are compatable for Windows 98.

If I uninstall Paint and Imaging, how do I reinstall them? With my Windows 98 cd?

Thanks for your Help

To answer your last question first, Yes, through Add/Remove Programs> Windows Setup >Accessories >Details in Control Panel..The procedure is the same as installing except you "Uncheck" the box.

I don't know what PView is (nothing rings a bell).,it must be from some other software. (maybe your scanner or camera) Google it. I will too

First go Start>Settings >Folder Options and "View" tab,
add a check "Show all files"
uncheck "hide file ext for known file types"

You go Start>Find> Files and Folders -OR-
WinKey + F

Make sure only C:\ appears in "look in" box..browse if necessary or use the dropdown box

Type TWAIN in "Named"
it'll return all variations

Well it's(pview=Process Viewer) part of
Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0

I don't have or use it..plus it looks complicated, like the 2 I have called OLE/COM Object Viewer, and Dependency Walker that came with MS Win98 Resource Kit.

Maybe I should just Uninstall all the Twain Driver and then Reinstall it.. What do you think? If you think I should do you know how to do that?

I thought you understood that the first time...Look up and you'll find it...thanx, and hope you get it fixed [bigsmile]
