I am having an extremely difficult time locating the Microsoft CD titled "Windows 98 Second Edition Updates". This is the CD that will upgrade first edition 98 to second edition.

Microsoft no longer sells it, and I have searched the net until I am blue in the face, to no avail. I purchased a full version of Win 98SE, but the installation specifies that it is for machines without Windows. I really only want to do an upgrade, without wrecking my whole world. Does anybody know where I can obtain this? Preferably via a download, but if I have to buy a CD, I can do that.

Thanks.

I bought mine on ebay last year.
ebay search for windows 98 se update might show some hits.

Yeah, I looked there already. I guess that may be my only option. I just have a problem paying anywhere from $50 to $100 for a CD that Microsoft initially offered for $19.95.

For that matter, I have a bit of a problem with Microsoft charging for it to begin with.

Thanks.

There's a method for using the full SE version to upgrade, I believe (posted here a number of times). Something like renaming win.com before starting the installation (try searching here for other posts about this - its been too long since I installed 98 to remember!)

Yes, you don't need the upgrade version to perform an upgrade. Here are a couple ways around it (the safest option is #1, but #2 has been known to work too):

1) Backup user.dat and system.dat (your registry) just in case. Search for and rename all copies of win.com to win.old. Reboot using a Win98 floppy, go to a DOS prompt and try to run setup. If Windows tries to install into the C:\Windows.000 directory, just rename it to C:\Windows.

-----------------------------------

2) Run setup from a DOS prompt using the following command:

D:\win98>startup /NTLDR

Where D: should be the letter of your CD-ROM drive. You may want to use a Win98 startup disk to boot to DOS. The switch NTLDR tells Windows not to detect a previous operating system. It's a good idea to backup the registry again as a precaution.

*Note: Just be aware that you may or may not have to reinstall some of your applications using either method. I have only used the first option once and don't remember having to reinstall any of the customer's applications.

I recently reformatted my harddrive and reinstalled windows98. I've got a retail cd for 98fe and an update disk for 98se.
I didnt have any of the "clean install from an upgrade cd" kind of info printed out so I couldnt remember what things I needed to try.
When I tried to run the 98se update cd, it wouldnt work--I didnt write down what happened so I dont remember now--I'm thinking it was either no response at all or a message similar to this that nato308 wrote in thread751-696882
------
"...the process will start and then tell you it cannot continue because you already have an operating system
that "cannot be upgraded by this version". "
-------
I think what I was expecting, since I had the drive reformatted, was somekind of looking for previous version comment/request and I definitely didnt get anything like that.

My boss was hovering and I finally had to give up and run 98fe install and then do 98se update.

I dont know if there was something I could have done differently to get a first pass install from the 98se update cd.

cdogg,

Thanks for the advice. This did it. Windows was upgraded fine, and all of the user settings remained intact.

Thanks again.

AEShier,
Glad that worked! [thumbsup2]

diogenes10,
If you start with a blank hard drive, you can still perform a clean install using the Win98SE update CD. During the initial phase of setup, it should prompt you to insert a CD (previous version of Windows 95/98FE) and possibly enter the corresponding serial number from the old version.

It's been a long time since I've done it, but I know it can be done. The main reason is because of hard drive crashes, in the event that someone who purchased the update CD needs to be able to reload 98SE from a blank hard drive.

Hi cdogg

Because of a little intermittent freezing, I've been trying to decide if I want to try the reinstall again over the holiday. I've been looking again this morning and am still unable to find any support for being able to use an update (not upgrade) cd for a clean install.

The update cd appears to be the exception to the general rule, requiring an fe install first.(my guess is because it was so much cheaper at release time).
