Hi everyone, I just have a few questions I hope that some of you might be able to answer. First, I noticed that when I start up my computer and access files folders, anything from Win explorer to My Documents, the access time is extremely fast. The files in the various folders pop up in an instant. But after some time, say a few hours, access to folders becomes slower and sluggish. It takes up to a second or more to access folders that used to open instantly. Does anyone have any idea as to what I could do? Also, should I set the hard disk optimization tab to none or full? I've heard opinions that support both. Lastly, should I set minimum and maximum values for the vcache? Currently, I have nothing under the vcache line in the system.ini. Thanks for the help

Hi there,
I had performance problems as I run a mix of applications.
I have had success with a freeware program called cacheman, which has a lot of presets for various operating systems and the facility to make your own settings.
I have been using version 4.1 for a long time now with personal settings(trial and error). I have just looked and a version 5.11 is now available. Perhaps you would like to try it.It has facilities to suspend it and adjust it. It also has an uninstaller too. It also shows available memory dynamically on the task bar.

regards Michael.

Hey TenKong,

How much ram do you have? Maybe you need more. Maybe the programs you are using is leaking memory? Theres a registy hack to unload dll's that should help. Have you set your computer to server in the performance section? This will help out a lot in maximizing your cache. If you're running win95 adjusting the vcache settings will help out a lot, if you're running win98 then it may help out some or not at all, win9x automatically adjust vcache as needed and usually does a good job, depending on how you're using your computer vcache tweaking may improve performance. Cacheman attemps to do this by having pre-set configurations of how you use your computer. flip to system properties click on the last tab and see how much free resources you have left if its under 50 you may see some slowdowns when you get to 20% and under that will slow down your computer.

I also used cacheman and am satisfied. It is equivalent to always shutting down your computer to regain leaking memory to memory-hungry programs.

This is overkill I know , some information may not be relevant , but
for those that are reading this question & learning rather than
answering , they may get something out of these extra sites .
