I have a very strange problem which I have never seen in my life. I would need all the help I can get.

Here is the situation. I have inhereted a Network which is a mix of Netware and Windows 2000 Active derectory. One by one all PCs (Currently logging into Novell) needs to be transfered to the Active directory environment. Everything works fine, except Windows 98 PCs. They still need IPX and will not log into the active directory with just TCP/IP. If I remove ipx, it will not login. I am not sure if there is something I need to do on the server, switch or on the desktop end.
I have tried all methods and am strongly considering rebuilding these PCs if this persists.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Check using either ipconfig /all or winipcfg and see if they are getting an IP address from the server?
If they are and cannot connect to the server then add an option in DHCP to give them the DNS servers IP address.
It sounds like they are not able to resolve the domain name to an IP address.
You could also put an lmhosts file on the w98 pc's with the Severs address.

For Sumaya: - These 98 machines are normal low end PCs which could not be upgraded to Windows 2000 Prof and the company still wants to keep them. I have no problem with window 2000 machines loggin into the domain.

For shovel204:- I have tried all methods. The PCs can get IP from DHCP (and so is all the DNS and WINS settings which is accociated with DHCP) and since they have an IP, they can access the internet. The only thing they cannot do is log into the Active directory.

HELP HELP

Oh... by the way I can ping all the windows 2000 Servers both with their netbios name and IP address from the win98 PCs

vijmat,

Have you told the 98 machines they need to log on to an NT network?

Properties of Network neighborhood
Properities of Client for MS Networking (If you don't have it, you need it.)
Configuration tab
check the Log onto NT Domain checkbox

There are a couple of other properties that need to be checked or filled out, including the domain and if you want to connect immediately can't remember all of it but if that is the problem you should be able to take it from there.

Make sure you have installed the DS Client for Win98 from the Win2k server CD (client directory) as this allows them to access the AD resources.

Thanks for all the tips. Loading the DSclient did solve this problem.

You guys are the best

Try to remove novell client 32 with the removel tool and then try to connect to the server
