I am running windows 98 2nd edition on an AMD 5oo prossesor with 256K ram for no aparent reason the system will locks up totaly and can only be restarted by the restart button as keyboard and mouse are disabled totally.
- delete all *.tmp files
- clear browser cache (for IE, go to Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files-check all offline content as well)
- clear out startup folder of unnecessary items (i.e. Office Startup, Fast Find, etc...) under Start->Programs
- use msconfig from the RUN menu, go to the Startup tab, and deselect anything that you recognize but need to load w/windows
- reboot into safe mode (F8 during startup)
- run scandisk
- defragment c:
- reboot
If this doesn't work, post back with more details like how long it takes before you encounter this problem, make and version of virus scanning software installed, etc...
Well Thanks for comments: the Fan is darn noisy.
I ama using windows 98 2nd edition I have stripped the system down to the basics so there are no extra cards or drives and still had a lock out. , The main board is ATX AL9 with an AMD 500 prosessor. direct x cacame with PC Driver support discRiva ver 3.0. thats about all I know.
So how hot is your system when it locks up? Heat is the number one destroyer of amd chips. Try opening the case and putting a household fan up to it while it is running and see if it still locks up, or ground yourself and touch the chip to see how hot it is if it burns your finger it is time for a new fan or worse yet a new cpu
