As says in the subject, Windows 98 keep restarting after it shows the Windows 98 is now starting up screen. I have tried restoring a previous registry, but the problem is still occuring. THe only thing I did to the computer before I restarted it last was defragment it, so I have no idea what could be causing this problem, and I would be grateful for any replys, thanks!

Please post more information on your computer,,,,,,
about the hardware specifically.

****** Can you boot up in SAFE MODE ??????
Hold the F8 key down while booting up from a cold start.
At the menu choose SAFE-MODE.

***** ALSO - Try this a 2nd time: NORMAL start - & MAKE BOOTLOG (it may contain - at the end of all the text, a reference to a hardware device that won't load, like your NIC or Sound Card).

Then you will have to track down which hardware device will not load.
** ON C: drive there will be a boot log.

**** BOOTLOG ...... read that BOOTLOG and see what it says at the END..... skip all the way through to the end.

I've had a similar problem in that since defragmenting (I also deleted some files but they were only IE temporary and other temporary files) my PC no longer switches itself off. The screen will go black (and occasionally goes to restart Windows) but I have to manually switch everything off. Would you suggest I try the same method described here?

Hi Julianne, are you running win98se? If so check out this thread thread615-4131 something in there might help you. Sounds like you have the ever so common win98 shutdown problem.

I had the same problem. I defragged the system and replaced the power source. No probs since. :)
