I can't seem to get Windows 98SE to detect my Laserjet printer. After a reformat, I hooked everything up and proceeded to re-install all my apps. As the computer booted, it detected the printer and since I didn't have a driver (planned on dowloading later) I just kept clicking "ok" until it listed it as an unknown device. I figured I'd get back to it later. Anyway, its not listed in the device manger under unknown or anything for that matter. I tried to let windows detect it, it failed of course. Deleted the printer port from the device manager, thinking it would re-detect the printer once it installed the port again. Once again, no go. I made sure the power was on to the printer and it worked without error before. This is the second time I've had this issue with a Dell Win98 machine. I fixed the first computer by installing a bios update, but this one already has the newest bios installed. Thanks in advance :)

Printer: HP laserjet 1100 using parallel port
OS: Win98SE fully updated
PC: Dell optiplex gx150

So go to safe mode, device manager, look for the printer there, remove and reinstall properly.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

So it will show in the device manager in safe mode but be non-existent in normal mode?

Use the add printer wizard.

I feel so stupid. I was thinking that you could not use the add printer wizard if the OS didn't detect your printer. Oh well....

denzilla;
don't you dare feel that way -- if we all admitted feeling that way once we had learned/discovered a new technique or learned something about MS's devilish inner workings -- we'd all be considered dunces

BTW
I admire your humbleness - if only the rest of the populous would work on this virtue...

Thanks for the words of encouragement :) Although, I'm afraid that there isn't much you can do to not make me feel dumb as a rock sitting infront of a SUSE 9.1 machine. I installed it on an ole PC of mine and I felt as though I never touched a PC in my life! LOL....

Where do you think Matt Groenig (The Simpsons), got DOOHHH?
We all have those moments. Unfortunately, as techs, we often look for the complex, technical answers. After fighting the problem, it's so often the simple answer!
