When attempting to MAP a network drive to an IP address\file share name, Windows 95 uses the local user on the machine to gather its login details. Unlike Window 2000/XP you cannot change the user.
Does anyone know anyway how this can be changed? As some users bypass the local logon and are therefore unable to map a network drive.

Does the network not use a network login script, or are you saying that it is prompting them for both a network and local login prompt?

The network uses a Netware login script. The problem is I am commissioning a new Windows 2000 server and many of the Client machines that are set to use it still use Windows 95. I need to keep the Novell script, but also need to map a network drive to the new server. I thought I would be able to do this by simply entering the domain and DNS details in the IP config on the NIC? However, although I can log onto the domain I cannot map a drive? I can map a drive using the same settings/config on windows 98 client machines?

Well, it doesn't make sense that Win98 clients don't have this problem, but Win95 ones do.

1) Are you sure local user profiles are set up the exact same way on both OS's?
2) Does each Win95 PC have more than one person who logs onto it? If not, you can disable multiple user profiles and just use a single one.
3) When you say you can't map a network drive, are you saying it's giving you an error message when you try to manually, or are you counting on the network script to map them automatically?

Check into the "Primary Network Logon" on the 98 and try to match it in 95..I don't know if 95 has "Client for MS Networks"...See if anything can help here, even though it's 98, may ring a thought.. thread615-711086 if you can get anything out of these....they're long winded

Profiles are not enabled on the machines, both are configured to allow all users to access the system.
I do receive an error when I attempt to map the drive which reads 'unable to map drive e:\ to \\10.66.27.10\nw2it the drive or resource may not be available'
Any ideas?

Can you ping or tracert to the IP address?

What kind of OS is the network drive on that you're mapping to? If it's Windows, have you tried mapping to \\Computername\nw2it instead of \\IP Address\nw2it?

Make sure both the Win98 and Win95 PC's are using the same protocols. Right-Click Network Neighborhood and select properties. Perhaps the 98 PC has one that the 95 PC does not, explaining why the 98 PC's don't have this problem.

I entered the domain name in into the WORKGROUP option on the machine and the machine was then able to browse and join the DOMAIN? Very odd? Thanks for your help.

I read your problem and noticed no one mentioned that you have to dis-able the NETWARE IPX/SPX client for the NIC and instead install the MicroSoft Client. Maybe I'm too basic, and maybe you have but I would start there.

Remember, you have to reboot, after the de-install, for the complete erase of the Netware, then install MS client and reboot again.

YoungManRiver,
I believe during this discussion that DazzaC mentioned that Win98 PC's on their network did not have this problem. I suggested that we compare the protocols installed on the 98 PC's to the one on the problematic 95 PC. I'm sure if the Netware client was mistakenly in there, it would have been seen.
