windows 7 trouble

Hey guys,
So I've been trying to get our new BOH up and running with windows 7. So far everything has installed fine, but I am having some difficulty networking the terminals to the BOH. I have checked the lana numbers, and I am able to run and complete the terminst without a hitch. Ctlsvr is running, and I have followed coorsman's guide to installing aloha on windows 7. And yet, every time I attempt to run the terminal it cannot locate file server. I know I'm probably overlooking some simple network setting, but I am completely stumped!

Sounds like a file sharing problem. Can you edit a txt file on the server from the terminal and terminals from the file server.

Post the last few lines of a debout from a terminal located in the \aloha\tmp folder.

I am able to edit and save txt files both ways.

I just double checked all of the variables and they match the server side.

change the DOB in the aloha.ini file to 3/04/11 or you can change the date of business in aloha manager under maintenance - system.
Delete the trans.log file from data then refresh.

Alright, thats done, but it still cannot locate file server.
debout reads the same but with a correct DOB. This seems really odd, The ctlsvr is set up with the Aloha login. It seems as though its not even looking at the server when its determining file server. Could it be a windows firewall issue?

What version of Aloha are you trying to install. What version of windows 7, 32 or 64 bit.

I am running windows 7 32 bit on the BOH. I made all of the modifications to the network settings that you suggested on the faq page with a fresh install of aloha 6.5.20 (the copy you uploaded for me). For some reason it doesn't like the login data from my previous version of aloha (6.5.19), so I am unable to login to aloha manager. Is there a default login for installation? I noticed alt x doesn't seem to work any more.

Okay, never mind, its agreeing with the data now. Unfortunately terms are still "looking for fileserver." The terminal debout reads the same, it just times out looking for the file server. I noticed a debout.svr on the file server:

I don't really know what to deduce from this other than the term is timing out. If i can file share with the file server and the file server can file share with the terminal then why on earth is it timing out?

Actually problem solved! I tweaked the windows firewall as well as the Lana config on the terminals and now everything seems to be working. I'm still having some problems with EOD and windows 7 is giving me an error message when I run grindq. At least the terminals are operational! Thanks for your help!

just spend 3 hours troubleshooting an identical problem, it was lana. if you're running 64 bit you're sol. sorry, just jumping in here, but i scanned your post and it's identical to what I just dealt with. hope it helps.

(there are a ton of other things it could be, but this one is precisely what i saw to the letter so... gluck!)

The regular lanacfg for XP will work but you will need to turn off UAC in windows 7 first.

UAC has been off since I installed windows 7 as it conflicts with vnc viewer (crashes with administrator prompt). However, the only way I could get the terms to connect to the server was by changing the lanacfg. Currently my lanacfg on both terms is:

Lana: 0
Aloha NIC
Lana: 1
Netbios

Server side I was unable to change the lanacfg for netbios so I set the aloha nic as 0.
Since changing the lana the terminals have worked fine except that I have to manually process EOD. As far as I can tell so far, this lana configuration is the ONLY way the terms will connect.

FYI
When networking Win7 there are a few things I do for POS systems:

1. Make the network HOME as it has the least security & highest visibility
2. If Turning off the firewall, turn off in the Software, dont just disable the service, as the OS keeps stopping the connections
3. In advanced settings turn on Network Discovery, Public Folder Sharing, File & Printer Sharing

Once it is all good, I then work backwards & apply security as needed ie firewalls on & allow apps etc.
