I have 2 computers both with XP Pro. I wish to load Windows 7 on one but as they have access to each others data I am worried that once Windows 7 has used and updated its data I will not be able to read it with the computer that has XP.

The reason I only want one computer to have Windows 7 is to see how I get on with it. I did hear that data created by 7 is not readable by previous operating systems

Advice would be gratefully received.

That's total rubbish. Data created in Windows 7 should be perfectly readable in XP.

There may be a few instances when it can't be read, but that would be down to the applications used to create the data rather than windows itself.

For instance if you use Office Word 2007 or 2010 to create a Word document it may not be readable in a Windows XP machine with Office 2003 unless you download the Update patch for Office 2003. But hey it would not even be readable in Windows 7 if it only has Office 2003.

I am flitting between Windows 7, Vista, and XP, in a multi boot machine, and have never had any troubles accessing, reading, or writing files, in any of the loaded systems from, or to, any of the other not loaded systems.

Thanks vacunita and linney.

It was strongly suggested that Windows 7 files could not be read by previous operating systems around the time 7 was released. I was going on those reports. I shall now try 7 with confidence.
