Somehow my background on win2k got changed. To clarify, I'm not talking about the normal desktop image or the boot screen. Once you are using windows and you press Ctrl-Alt-Del, it goes to the windows security menu. The screen in the background of this is what I am talking about. I was watching a dl'd movie trailer, and a screenshot of the mpeg is now that background. How do I change it back?

Hmm, you could try working backwards on this. If it's using a screenshot of an .mpg, try searching your registry for that .mpg's name, it might turn up as the value of the reg key that sets this background.
Once you know what reg key is loading this, you can look up the value of this key on a normal version of W2K (or just post it here and someone can tell you what we've got).
Hope it works...

I have that problem with the HP computers we purchase, they like their logo to be in the backround while signing on. I just delete the BMP file from the WINNT directory.

I tried checking my pc for any images, but none matched the one in the background, and deleting the mpeg didn't help either. I think it must store under another extension, as with windows 98, which stores the background as a .sys file. But I haven't found any with the same name either.

How would I check the registry, step by step. I have never edited it before.

start, run, regedit. Go to the edit menu and select find. Search for the possible filename. Don't delete anything without checking back here first! You don't want to kill your computer. Curious, what desktop wallpaper are you using now? Is active desktop enabled?

My current desktop is just one of windows pictures, wave or some such. And active desktop has to be enabled to show a desktop image. But again, it isn't the desktop image that I'm having the problem with, it's the startup screen. (does anyone else know what it's actual name is?)

I wasn't able to find anything searching the registry. Do you have any idea which part should be tweaked?

I'll save before editing anything of course.

Thank you echoecho...the so called undesired behavior in the second KB article you linked is something I've been trying to accomplish.
