I'm network adminstrator at a school. We are planning to migrate to win2000 workstation and use the profiles to lock down the desktops.These desktops are going to be connecting to a Novell 5.1 server. I was also planning to use a windows 2000 server to hand out the policies. I don't know that much about win2000. I was wondering what common problems might occur and if I would even need the win 2000 server to hand out the policies. Most of the students travel from class room to class room during the day, so the policies would have to be enforced on which ever computer they logon to.

To be honest with you, you could apply the policies VIA the Win2k Pro GPO snap-in. You're not obligated to have a Server for this, it can be done on the client workstations.

Try this:
Start-->Run & Type MMC
Choose File--> Add Remove Snap In
Choose Group Policy
Choose Add

It's pretty self explanitory from that point on...

GPO's replace NT 4.0 System Policies, they're quite a powerful tool when used correctly, good luck :) sdibias

If you have a Novell 5.1 Server why dont you use the ZenWorks snap in to create and apply policies to container objects. This way the profile will follow them anywhere. This is easier to manage then physically going to each machine to create policies for each. Jeremy Leasure

My suggestions are just that, suggestions.
