I have a windows 2000 server that has never surfed the web, it is co-located in a local phone company. I administrer it remotely. Today I was cleaning the system files up and a pop up add in an IE window appeared. I have disabled the system messenger that a year ago was sending me lots of messages. Now appears this pop up ie window for cheap tickets. I virus scan daily. The ie has only ever looked at microsoft for updates. How can I nip this in the bud?

how about loading a POP up stopper. A good freeware one is available from PanicWare.com, or there is one built into the Google Toolbar.

You can also take a look at your Firewall and see if there is anything you can do there.

Looks like Spyware.
I agree with markdmac, the google toolbar is fantastic, but it only works within IE. If you are getting popups when doing standard admin stuff without IE open, then you probably have some type of spyware.

I use AdAware from Lavasoft (free) to remove spyware, and the latest version of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (7.1) also removes a limited amount of spware.

Good Luck,

Steve.

Stevehewitt makes a good suggestion. I use the lavasoft AdAware too. It works great and is a free download to boot!

You can get it at
Once you have any spyware removed I would suggest you implement a policy to only allow visitation to Support.Microsoft.com and Windows Update on your server.
