Hi all we are about to start making a move over to XP SP2 from Win2k, we have quite a few apps that we have made our own MSI's for using WinInstall and they all have WINNT as the system dir.

What problems am i likely to run into with the XP system dir being C:\WINDOWS?

Am i better off specifying the target system dir as WINNT for our XP boxes during setup?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

Well I would take two machines and test them.. test 1 with WINNT and one with WINDOWS and see what types of problems you come up with.

I have an XP box running with WINDOWS as the folder and so far so good, i was just seeing if anyone said NO DON'T DO IT. :)

Thanks fo your reply.

no that's not an issue.. from your first post I was thinking your MSI's were setup to install to WINNT as the system dir, instead of the default %System% directory.

There isn't a problem with WINDOWS being the default directory, not at all, unless you have software which doesn't adapt.

Excellent i was hoping that would be the case. The reason i checked was that in the distribution folder where the msi resides there is a Program Files folder and a WINNT folder i wasn't sure what would happen. Like you say it seems to just look for %SYSTEMROOT% so it should be ok and seems to be ok so far.

I have a few test systems up and running now so i'll find any issues over the next few days.

Thanks.
