Hi

I currently have the setup as below, what i will be doing is buying 2 new servers to replace the 2 existing servers in London, What Should my initial plan be to ease the migration to windows 2003 server and windows 2003 exchange ?

currently:

London - SERVER1 = DC+FP
SERVER2 = DC+Exchange 2000
SERVER3= DC+Veritas backup exec 8.6

New York - SERVER1 = DC+FP+Exchange 2000+Veritas backup exec 8.6

thanks in advance

Has anyone any suitable suggestions ?

I did this exact thing myself (but without exchange) a while back. First thing, get the new servers onto the network and make them domain controllers.

Then this is what I did:

1. Move over the user profiles / documents / printers (etc)
from their relavant windows 2000 counterparts.

2. Once this is done and you find your serving most files
from the new servers, then setup new DHCP & DNS servers
on the new servers.. and authorise them. Make sure
whatever (small) pool you use at first you mark as
an exclusion zone on the existing servers, then disable
the DHCP server on the first, followed by increasing the
pool on the other to fill it. I'd run both DNS servers
for a while to save confusing active clients, just swap
which is the primary and secondary.

3. Make the "primary" of the two new servers the
"Operations Master" etc for the new domain, this should
take you to a state where you can offline the old and
not have a problem.

Just remember to TAKE IT SLOW. Run dual things like DNS / DHCP for a while if you need to. If done correctly you'll have no problems at all (ours went picture perfect! - apart from one Intel NetPort printbox which went scatty!)

Final Note:
Remember to update any roaming profile locations / redirected mydocuments folders! I'd recommend you move
the profiles / documents in the evening when nobody is
logged on.

Hi Rob,

thanks for your advise, is it possible for me to bring the two new servers online with the samename as existing DC's, i would like to eventully have the new servers with same IP as well ?

thanks

You cannot use the same names im afriad, name them something else. Unlike W2000 however W2003 allows you to rename a DC at a later date, so you can change them back when you've finally killed off the old DC's
