It is an old PC with Celeron 333. I just formatted hard drive and installed Win2000 Pro. The installation went through successfully. The network (access to a workgroup) was setup during the installation.

After I restarted the PC (normally), the screen turned black right at the end of startup. I restarted the PC several times and got the same result. The I restarted it in the safe mode and it turned out OK.

My guess is, when the PC started to access the network, something went wrong. Am I right? Could anyone give me some tips fixing the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong but to me sounds like an issue with a video driver. I would load in safe mode, uninstall it if it has one and install the right one and see if that fixes it.

Have you looked in event log (run eventvwr.msc)

Any devices showing yellow ! or ref x in device manager (unfortunately you can't see them all in Safe Mode).

If you suspect network - just remove (or disable if onboard) the NIC and try again.

echoing electronicsfreak - if you have another graphics card available, might be worth trying.

Its always difficult trying to pin down the culprit in these situations - good luck!

electronicsfreak,

You are absolutely right. In the safe mode, I can see that there is a general video driver there. I uninstalled the driver and restart the PC normally. It worked, although the quality of video is low. The video card is Jaton video-67P. It is hard to find the driver for Win2000 right now. So I just leave it alone.

You should be able to find the driver. Go to driverguide.com , membership is required but free.
