I have a P2400 pc running windows2000. everthing works fine. I went to the product update on the microsoft website to update my windows program and windows 2000 sp2 wouldn't load. it gives me a message that reads [an unknown error has occured. service pack2 could could not be installed].
everything else was instelled properly except for service pack 2. could someone help me solve this problem?

Do you have a valid product key for your copy of Windows 2000?

If you find out, I would be interested to know.I have sp2 on disk, and every time I install it on my other computer(amd duron 800) I get the BSOD. I end up uninstalling SP2 to get the computer to work. I have downloaded it twice and both times same thing.
I sent AMD a tech support e-mail but no answer as of yet. M$ also no answer, other than SP2 works with AMD. They havent tried it with my machine.

Perhaps you should try installing SP2 seperate of Windows Update. You can download it at the following URL:

Express install will connect to the net and download only the updates required for your version, and will end up being about 10MB. The Network Install (101MB!) will download every file you could possibly need for any version of Windows 2000 but if you've got a fast internet connection, and want to run it all locally once it's downloaded, that might be a good option for you. The BSOD after installing SP2, overwrites a file called ATAPI.SYS. This files has some information about the hard drive and for some reason "unknown" this info is lost during the upgrade. If you can get the file before you upgrade, lets say a new install. Copy this onto a floppy and you will need your boot your system using boot disks and then do a manual repair and use the Recovery Console, copy the file from floppy to c:\winnt\systems32\driversIt will overwrite the exisiting ATAPI.SYS file, but click yes to do it.

Here's a site to know how to use the Recovery Console.

Good Luck and Have Fun :)
