Hello,

My Windows 2000 wouldn't boot. It freezed everytime at the same point, during the graphic startup screen. A repair setup didn't help, so I decided to reinstall windows 2000.
But setup freezes everytime during the 'scanning hardware' part.
Is there a way to work around this problem?

thanx!

While booting up, can you hit the F8 key and select 'Last Known Good Configuration'. Does it boot up? Does it boot up in 'Safe Mode'? Have you loaded any new software lately? Installed new Hardware?

uninstall all your cards, usb devices, any extra harddrives and CD-rom type drives except the Video card.(leave 1 Harddrive, 1 CD-Rom)
try the install again.
if it locks up again.
swap out the devices
if it locks up again.
swap the video card
if it still locks up.
swap the Ram

if you still have a problem try a different MB.

if it loads to completion. reinstall each device one at a time with a reboot after the drivers install.

I am sure you will find what device is causing the problem.

Just to recap, you went through the Windows 2000 install - it rebooted and now while it's setting up hardware, it's hanging on the graphic Starting Windows 2000 screen?

How long have you left it before rebooting?

Is this on an older motherboard? If so, does the manufacturer supply a BIOS upgrade that addresses a problem like this?

First, you might want to verify that all pieces of hardware are on MSFT's HCL:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/whql/hcl/

If everything checks uot, see if a repair (as opposed to a reinstall) will get you back up and running:

And finally if you go through the repair you might want to try booting clean (even after the CD assisted setup):

I had a similar problem and found that the setup files were not properly loading, so when the setup was looking for certain cabs , they were not there and the computer rebooted. Eventually I loaded ME then used the gui method to load Win2K on a separate partition. GF

Thanks all for your help!

The funny thing is: the next day I tried installing win2000 again. But this time, it just continued with setup, and finished without any problem!
I am still puzzeled about this all, but happy that my PC is running OK again.

thanks!

Hi,
I realize that you're not having this problem anymore, but I was having the same issue with one of my luser's HP machine and turns out the hard drive had started a steady decline about a week before I got the machine. When I tried to load an OS on it, the machine would just reboot itself over and over and over again -- it would get to the splash screen and then reboot. The recovery disks wouldn't work either. Turns out I had a hard drive that was on the brink of completely crashing. Just thought you might want to try another hard drive (maybe a spare one or one out of a very similar computer) before replacing the whole motherboard on the machine (it might be cheaper).
Thanks!!
