Hi,

I've got a Windows 2000 Server with a boot problem that I'm hoping someone can help me with. First I'll start out with a description of the server and what we've done to it so far.

HP Netserver E800
P3-1GHz (Single CPU)
640MB Ram
3x18GB SCSI Raid 5 with Netraid controller

Windows 2000 Server
SQL 7.0
McAfee Netshield 4.5
pcAnywhere 10.5

We applied SP3 for Windows 2000 and upon reboot were presented with a message stating that ....\SYSTEM was corrupted or not found (something to that affect). Of course there wasn't an ERD so we were forced to revert to the default SYSTEM hive. We did this but came up with an error reading the hard drive. Unfortunately I didn't write down the exact errors as they came up so I can't give you those. Well, we booted to the Repair Console and tried a few things. One of the first things we noticed was that the Boot.ini had a signature(e666e666) for the hard drive. We're not sure if that was always there but it seemed kind of an unlikely random combination. I should mention that this server had not been rebooted for several months before this and had been hit by viruses several times during those months (I wasn't told this until after this mess happened). I don't believe that SP3 caused any of the problem but I could be wrong. Anyway, the system would not boot. We tried running FIXMBR and FIXBOOT without any success. We also tried a reinstall of Windows 2000 over the top of the existing system. Well, now we're able to boot from a boot disk but cannot boot from the hard drive. We get one of two errors depending on what we have in the BOOT.INI on the hard drive. Oh yes, I should mention that there is a small FAT partition (HP Utils) first on the hard drive so our NTFS partition is number 2. Anyway, here are the two errors. If anyone can give me any direction I would greatly appreciate it.

BOOT.INI with scsi(0)

error reading disk

BOOT.INI with signature(e666e666)

Windows could not start because of a Computer Disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

I'm wondering if the FIXMBR command wrote a new signature to the device. Does anyone know how to find out what the signature actually is?

Thanks in advance.
