Hi.
Running a windows 2000 server network with 10 users. Was using proxy+ to deal with internet and email. This has since gone wrong (putting it politely).
What i am asking is, is it ok to let the route deal with the connections itself and the isp deal directly with the email?
Thanks

For incoming mail (pop3 I guess), I see no problems in having the router handle the connections, provided you antivirus policy is OK.

For outgoing mail, the router can handle this as well. Again, take care with viruses running their own SMTP engine.

If you can afford, running your own mail server has many advantages (centralized storage and backup, shared public folders, calendars, ...).

This all depends on the importance of email in your company. For most companies, 10 email users is enough to justify running their own mail server.

Hi.
Tthanks for the reply. Yeh the email is pop3 we have our own domain for email. Email isn't used that much, plus we're a school so don't really have the funds for our own mail server.
Thanks again.

Scotty,

In that case, you're better of spending the funds you have on antivirus software ;-)

However, it doesn't do any harm to check out the prices of educational licenses in your country. You might be surprised ... I've implemented an Exchange 2000 for a school some time ago on older hardware for a reasonable price.

Regards,
Wim

Hi.
Proxy+ seems to have sorted itself out over night. The cache file has deleted itself, was over 5GBs full!!
Have now changed that to store only 10MBs!
It was using 100% of the cpu, which made the server repond very very slowly.
But all seems fine now.
Thanks
Scott
