I have a MS 2000 SBS server on our network. When I took over the enjtwork from my predecessor I found that he has configured the whole network with a reserved range of IP addresses.

Exchange and ISA is installed on the server but not configured.

I changed the IP addressing of the network to a private range. I now have the situation that only machines that have obtained a address via DHCP from the server will talk to the server. Any devices with a static address will not communicate with the server, nor the server with them.

I have racked my brains about this. Ran Internet Connection Wizard in the to-do list in the management console. Updated all DNS, WINS, DHCP and LAT to no avail.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Marius

1)Why do any clients have static ip's? DHCP was designed for just this purpose.
2)If static is needed, have you done ipconfig /all on a working client and non-working to see what is different?
3)Is there a firewall involved that might be causing a problem?
Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

Hi Glen

We have a few network printers, a mail server and a firewall for external / internet access - these devices are all assigned a static IP address.

I have been considering setting them to DHCP and reserving their addresses so they get assigned the same address every time.

With Ipconfig /all there is no difference in Gateway, DNS or WINS assignments. If I ping one of the static device names it resolves correctly but cant get any replies.

Firewall on the network is between public and private network. Still have the same problem if I switch the firewall off.

Thanks

Marius

Ok, now have you checked for any messages in the logs? Have you turned the firewall off, then re-started one of the machines with static and see what happens? Have you tried the dhcp and reserving the addresses and see if that works like you mentioned? (Oh, and check for old hosts and lmhosts files on all clients and servers.) Good luck.
