Hello i recently built a win 2000 machine(x) and i set all the networking addresses up manually. i currently have 2 other machines one xp pro(a) and one win 2000(b). They all are networked thru a switch and then the uplink goes to the cable modem.Computers a and b both connect fine to the network and internet with manual assigning of numbers while the new computer (x) wont connect to the internet. It does see the network and can access the lan and computers on it but it wont see the internet. ive tried putting it on auto assign and it creates an ip address and subnet mask but it wont auto assign a dns or default gateway so it wont connect to the internet. the computer is running a netgear fa310tx ethernet card. if anyone could help me with this.
also the settings for networking are identical as far as i know to the other win 2000 machine that runs the internet.

thanks for your help

jason

Not a router?
What IP addresses are you using - have you got an external one (ie, that's on the internet) for each of the first 2 machines? - ie, did you get 2 IP addresses from your ISP?

More common set up would be cable modem into router, which is also DHCP server. PC all connected to router set to pick up IP addresses automatically (from the router) - so would be good to know how your's is setup.

yes it goes thru a switch. how i figured the numbers wa i had it autoassign and then i copied down the numbers. if i dont assign the numbers and let the computers do it automatically they will go online but not network. ip address is 24.121.64.170. yea i know a router would probably fix this but i was wondering if there was a way to do it keeping my switch.

thanks
jason

You really do not want to be using public IP addresses for your local LAN.

. either use ICS or some other proxy server; (you will have to add a second ethernet adapter to one computer);
. or get a broadband router. This should anymore be less than US $20 for cable;
. or, ask your ISP to give you a modem that has a built-in router.

I have the feeling that you your cable ISP may have at one time been willing to issue two IPs for the single cable node, but is not willing to give you three. You most certainly cannot have two or more machines using the same IP.

But more importantly is both the inefficiency and the egregious security concerns involved in having your local LAN workstations using public IPs. This is not tenable.

One way provided by your computers is to make one of them a software router since Microsoft provides that as part of 2k. You'll need either another Ethernet port or some cable modems support USB.

If usb, connect that to the modem and the ethernet to the switch in the uplink port. That will let all the other computers access to the internet.

The downside is that the computer/router must be up for the others to access the internet. The router/computer can be used as normal other than that little glitch.
