Hi,
I am constantly swapping out WIn 2K and Win NT units and running into the browser election issue all the time which is causing my network to crash.
If I disable all the Master Browsers will the system automatically elevct only one or is there an easier way?

TIA

Normally browser elections don't crash networks... How many computers do you have, what does your network look like. I typically disable the computer browser service on all workstation. It isn't needed. I might leave it running on one workstation, in the event the server goes down, it assumes the master browsing role.

If you have a Primary Domain Controller (PDC) on your network, it will ALWAYS will a browser election. It's built to do so. That means you can shutdown the browser service on the rest of your computers.

For an explanation to what browser elections are about do a search on Google for browser elections. There is a ton of info out there.

I checked a lot of Google last night especially the Groups and I couldn't see a solution. I am using workstations, suggesting (I think) I don't have a PDC.

I can by default shut down all the browser services but will that work?

Usually, the most powerful machine will think it's the master browser. For instance, if you have a dual processor, 2 gig server, with top of the line everything, and everything else connected pales in comparison, this will always make the claim as the master browser. Everything else, besides your BDC, if you have one, should have the browser service turned off.

The most recent OS will elect itself, so the Win 2k box will win over the NT4 box but every time you introduce a new Win2k box there will be an election.
