I can connect to the server when I log on and after about five minutes I cannot access anything on the servers. I try to ping and if fails about 2 out of four tries. I have installed 3 different Nics and they all act the same I am able to view this computer from the server and open shared files on it I also am able to get out to the internet with this Nic I am connecting to a single windows nt pdc all of my other systems have no problem seeing the server. I reformatted and reinstalled the OS and still have the same problem any suggestions

I am connecting through a switch but I have also tried connecting through other switches with the same result

ok if u are having the same results with dif nic and dif switches, are you using the same cable to do these checks

using different cable have actually moed machine to several other workstations and had the same result but put the other one back and then no problem

angels1,

A few more things to consider:

1. Ping failures are either a firewall issue, including hidden firewalls, or a Winsock service issue. I am excluding a bad NIC, as you have changed adapters so often this seems unlikely.

Repair the Winsock service:
2. Adjusting server and client autodisconnect settings is a good thing. There were a great deal of server-2-workstation issues handles with the Win2k Service Pack 4. Recommended.

3. You might consider re-doing your logon scripts. The default for Win2k and XP clients is to set the /Persistent flag to Yes.

Odd issues on the client side are often helped by changing your logon script:

net use * /Delete
net use /Persistent:No
net use ....
net use ....

You use the next lines I indicated with ... to do fresh mappings on logon by the user.
