Hi Everyone,

I am building a P4 2.66 on an Asus P4S533-MX motherboard with 512MB Ram, I am getting a STOP unknown hard error referring to ntdll.dll when I try to start installing the OS (Windows 2000 Professional), has anyone else ran into this problem, I tried some adjustments in the BIOS settings to no avail.

Any tips would be appreciated,

First thing I always check is the ram. If you have 2 x 256MB modules, then I 'd remove one of them and try again. If you get the same error swap out the modules and try that way. If you have only a single stick, beg, borrow or whatever another module and try with it.

Hi there,

goproweb - do what lesgray suggested... also download Memtest86 (it's dos based and can be run from the floppy) to check your RAM... go to the ASUS website and doublecheck the RAM, if it is recommended for use with the Mainboard...

from my experience usually name brand RAM works best...

I forgot to mention I removed the ram (1) and replaced it with a known good one,

Any other ideas?

Thanks

just a thought ... go to Ausus web site and check to see if there is an update to the bios.

All good suggestions. I'd go one further and go to the asus website and download any/all special drivers for win2k. Do the same for all hardware if possible. You might also try a different win2k cd.
Hope this helps.

I thought I would mention what I did to "fix" this, I bypassed the onboard video and put a common garden variety AGP card in and it loaded the OS fine. So something in the onboard video was not liked by Win 2000 Pro
