Windows 2000 DNS in NT 4.0 Domain

I have installed a windows 2000 server in my NT 4.0 domain and have also installed DNS service on this server. The DNS is not working. When I Click test (Simple) on the monitoring tab of the DNS page, the test fails. Can some one help.me. This DNS is only for internet use..

You need to establish which dns server is going to do what. If the NT4 box is providing dns for access to the internet why did you setup dns on the win2k server?

I would need a little more detail....What is your w2k server using as it's dns? (i.e. setting the dnsserver to resolve names from an external source=failure on localmachine)

What will this machine be resolving intranet or internet?

how are your zones configured?

Thanks guys for you infor. I have solved the DNS error. Now I am trying to install the symantec web security software on it and the installation does a DNS check which fails my DNS configuration. The troubling manual says to check to check using nslookup. I get 4 responses. The first two are meant for the DNS server and the Next two responses are for the proxy server. Is that correct when using the nsloolup utility ? If so how will my DNS server find the proxy address or how do I configure it ?

I am not sure what you mean by 4 responses. Do you mean you are resolving one Name to 4 addresses?

First, even though this server will provide DNS for internet only (not intranet), you will still need to be able to reach *some* of the internal devices (i.e. proxy server, domain controller, WINS, etc.). You will either need to enter static entries for the individual devices (my recommendation) or you will need to point this server to your other DNS box to resolve internal addresses. jamk555

What I meant by the 4 responses is when I use nslookup and type the ip address of the DNS server I get 4 responses.

The DNS Server Name'
The DNS Server Address
The Proxy Server name
The Proxy Server's IP Address

The software I am installing relies on DNS to work properly. I don't get any errors in the event log and neither does the simple query on DNS Server test fail.

The above 4 responses were detailed in the trouble shooting section of the software in an installing.

Now the response I am getting is the same for both the DNS server and the Proxy server (Both name and IP address). I think this is where I am wrong. My proxy server is a differrent server altogether.
How should I add the record for the proxy server in the DNS.
