Hello everyone,

I am hoping that someone can give me some advice.

We have a number of small offices (approx 20 people per office) which are connected to our central office.

Currently every computer in each office is set to a static IP address; however I want to change this so they use DHCP.

I have a central DHCP server at our main office, ive set each of the local routers to forward DHCP requests to that server, however I want to setup seperate scopes for each of the offices.

My question is how does each site know which scope to use?

Many thanks in advance

What type of switches/routers are you using?

We have Cisco Routers which connect each of the offices to our main office and each offices uses standard 3com switches.

Its my understanding that the Cisco router is enabled to forward DHCP requests to my DHCP server - as you can tell I didnt configure the routers.

I hope that helps.

If a request comes as a broadcast, than the client is on a local subnet. If it comes as an unicast with source IP from the clients subnet, than the client will be given IP from the that subnet.

The clients at your remote offices will get their "subnet" from the router at each office. Your DHCP server will have to be configured with scopes that match those subnets with the correct address range, default gateway, mask, etc.

Are you using RIP, EIGRP, OSPF on your routers?

Sorry for the late response, had a few days off.

The routers are a managed entity, however I am assuming they are EIGRP, once I know for sure I will let you know.
