Hi. I need help urgently. I have windows 2000 workstation. It has been working well since. Recently the
system hangs up, so I have switched off the PC power. when I try to start it shows the windows 2000 startup screen and before showing the blue screen for booting,
it restarts. It keeps restarting without getting to the logon stage. Pls assist

You've no idea at all what might have started this? Haven't added/removed any hardware/software recently? With no clues, its difficult to advise, but some suggestions:-

1. Can you get into Safe Mode (press F8 as windows starts booting)?

2. From same menu, does the 'Last known good configuration' option boot?

3. Boot into recovery console and run chkdsk c: /p

4. If still no good, a repair reinstall (keeps data, apps, settings, need to reapply service pack and windows updates afterwards) may do the job. Its a bit of a magic wand - sorts lots of problems 95% of the time:-

Here we go again: This can be a virus, but there seem to be fewer of those around these days. Your computer is probably set to reboot on error. Change the setting so you can get an error message. How to in this thread

When the error occurs, you will instead of rebooting probably get a BSD. There are folk here who actually know the probable meanings of the various hex codes. One is awed.

This could be caused by anything from a stack overflow to an IRQ error to who knows what.

I had this problem occur after a MS upgrade. It took a long time to get some of the problems solved.

Rather than reinstalling windows, you will want to try to fix it from the console. Just insert your drive at start up (First set your computer to boot to cd in startup) and follow the instructions to repair an existing windows configuration.

HOWEVER, before you do remember that a repair will erase all your upgrades, reduce your IE to about IE5 and cause a lot of other mischief, so be sure to check here and download the required programs to an easily located spot. (Like C:/
stuff) You will want IE6 or 7, a free standing copy of SP4. Somewhere here we made a list of the emergency tools you need before you start restoring windows. I can't find it, but look around. Footpad was there, I was, and a few others.
