windows 200 pro won't start 2

Hey guys,

I'm having trouble getting my windows 2000 pro box to boot. It starts up and I type in my username and password and from there it just sits there with the mouse as an hourglass, but nothing happens. I can go to my task manager and there are some services running, but nothing starts, and I don't have a desktop. Can anyone help?

If you can get to task manager, try starting a "new task" of explorer.exe ... that might at least get you to the desktop where you could do some virus scans and further troubleshooting. That, or start in Safe Mode.

Can you boot in safe mode? If so you may want to make sure you do not have a profile issue either. You can rename you profile folder in documents and settings to .old or just rename all together. When you restart and login you will have a clean profile. If you can boot fine of it then you can just copy the files/settings you need from the old profile.

I know that there have been many reports on Windows 2K having hangup on startup and shutdown. The MS website has updates that you can download to fix this problem..
