On some software that I run on my Inspiron 8100 (WinXP Home) when the software starts the window it opens is smaller than the monitor size and not all of the programs window is visible. In some cases this makes the software un-workable if buttons cannot be reached.

After contacting the software vendor(s) I get told that my font size is the culprit, and that I need to use a smaller font.

Which apparently is a problem. Here is what I have:

Windows and Buttons: Windows XP Style

Font Size: Normal

Screen Res: 1400X1050 pixels

Color quality: Highest 32 bit

Display DPI Setting: Normal Size 96DPI

Can anyone suggest something to me as this is getting very old.

Thanks.

The resolution on a 15" notebook works quite well for me at 1024x768, things get too small at higher resolution.

If the control buttons can't be reached to maximize the window, click on the title bar [colored bar at top of window] and drag the whole window to the left until the buttons can be seen and then click on Maximize. I've seen the windows get off-centered when I was experimenting with display setting.

To make the window fill the monitor screen.

To resize an open window.

To change the width, point to the left or right window border. When the pointer changes into a horizontal double-headed arrow , drag the border to the right or left.
To change the height, point to the top or bottom window border. When the pointer changes into a vertical double-headed arrow , drag the border up or down.
To change the height and width at the same time, point to any window corner. When the pointer changes into a diagonal double-headed arrow , drag the border in any direction.

You cannot resize a window when it is displayed in a full screen (maximized).

Tip: Easy on the Eyes
So you bought an XP notebook with a large display and a native screen resolution of 1400 by 1050 pixels or higher. The problem is, the icons and text look tiny. And if you switch to another resolution, everything looks bigger--but fuzzier.

Solution: Leave the screen in its native resolution. Right-click the desktop and select Properties from the shortcut menu to open the Display Properties dialog box. Click the Settings tab, and then click the Advanced button to open your monitor and graphics controller Properties dialog box. On its General tab, click the entry in the DPI Setting field to open that drop-down list, then click Custom Setting to open the Custom DPI Setting dialog box, where you can increase the size of the images that Windows displays. If the text is still too small, select the Appearance tab in the Display Properties dialog box and increase the font size (the Advanced button lets you set the font size for individual Windows elements).

You can also magnify the text in Word, Excel, and other Office documents for easier reading by selecting Zoom from the View menu.

Thanks Limey that fixed my problem!! Mark
