Hi,

I am trying to setup a new user for a win98 client through Active Directory. I've set up many users before without any problems. Here's what I have done so far:

Setup a some new users in AD.

Tried to log onto the network (on a win98 client) with the new user names

Got the error "User name cannot be found"

Successfully logged onto the network (on the same win98 client) with previously existing user names. So, it seems like the win98 client connectivity is setup fine.

Successfully logged onto the network with XP & 2K clients using the same new user names that could not logon via the win98 client. So, it seems like the new user setup should be fine.

Also, I have found that I cannot use any users newly created in AD (or via the SBS console/interface)on any win98 clients. It just seems like the win98 clients just don't even recognize that the newly created users exist in the domain -- even after a server reboot.

For what it's worth, when I say win98, I am referring to win98SE.

There must be some difference in the properties of the old and new users that affects win98 clients but doesn't affect win2K (and higher) clients. But I have searched hi and low and cannot identify ANY differences.

Does anybody have any ideas? This is driving me crazy!!

in AD under users Properties, Account Tab:
Reveiw the pre-Windows 2000 domain and username, is that what you're using to login?

Thanks tangostar, but I didn't find any problem there.

I have discovered this interesting tidbit though. Occasionally/rarely, I can logon via the win98 computer. This is only about once out of every 50 or so attempts. I can type in the username and password, click OK to logon, and click OK on the error. Then it takes me back to the logon screen. I can just keep repeating this using the same uername and password (without retyping them each time) just by clicking Enter, Enter, Enter, Enter,.... and occasionally it'll mysteriously recognize the password and let me onto the network. This is WITHOUT changing the username or password. Once I'm in, if I logout, it may or may not let me back in again.

Any further advice? Is there some time limit which Win98SE will wait to receive password verification from the server which keeps timing out, but if I hit it at just the right time, I receive a faster response?

Adios

Now I cant say this will work, but hav eyou tried installing AD Client on a 98 machine and then tried to login?

Thanks...
I have now (since you recommended it), but I am still getting the same results.

Ahhh. Got it. Answer was found in MS KB article 267877. I had a "rogue domain controller", which was trying to authenticate users. When I created new users, they were not ones that were carried over from (and therefore still existing on) the old server. We actually don't use this old server except to rarely refer to some old data, so I disconnected it from our network. Problem solved.
