Hi all,

Running a dual-boot of 98SE & W2K. For some strange reason, my Win98 started coming up in safe mode-looking form. The screen doesn't say "safe mode" in the corners though- weird. You cannot change the display via properties. It's 640 x 480, 256 colors. The prop. shows my GF3 Ti200 card as the adapter. The monitor driver is also installed. There are no exclamation points in device manager- I even expanded all the headings to show everything. Restart or shutdown doesn't change it. I ran scandisk & did a defrag just to try all I could- same thing. I even went into W2K via "F8" & tried the "restart normally" from the menu I knew was available there- no go. My W2K install runs & looks fine.

Can anyone advise?

It is not in Safe Mode. It just looks like that because it is running in 256 colors. I would try changing the driver of your video card. Or uninstall it in 98 and reinstall it again upon reboot....

Thanks for the reply Matt-

That was exactly it. I had already solved it, though, by reinstalling the drivers my self yesterday morning.

Still, it doesn't explain "why"? A running, "normal" Win98SE install that suddenly loses it's display drivers? It is weird. I don't get into 98 as much as W2K but I do use a few older programs that run better on 98SE so I keep it around.

Thanks for your time with this- it's appreciated

I have had the problem from time to time. I'm running 98SE with Nvidia 64MB video card and it has happened once. Begore that I had a Voodoo 2000 card and it use to happen every so often.

All I had to do was reset the video display and it would be OK.

I think it is one of those quirks that happen from time to time with 98SE that leaves you baffled as to why it happens but have a simple solution to get round it.

C'est la vie!! :)
